Saturday evening’s Enchanted Ball is the perfect opportunity to indulge in a bit of Disney fantasy, old school or new. Be like 2017’s Belle, a fearless inventor with pockets in your dress, or put on your best Prince/ss Charming suit.

‘Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe’ will be presented exclusively at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) from 27 May to 3 September 2017. It will be the first major Marvel-related exhibition to be staged in Australia and the largest ever presented in an art museum. Including original artwork, film props, costumes and more, the exhibition will give significant focus to the Marvel comic artists, and the development teams who translate the drawn narrative to the screen through production design and storyboarding, costume and prop design, special effects and post-production.

Sunday afternoon swing dance picnics at the base of the iconic Kangaroo Point Cliffs are one of the highlights of BLX every year.

Bring an esky, a rug and a plate of nibbles to share, and spend the afternoon dancing and chatting with old friends and new beside the Brisbane River.


Albert Nicholas, a clarinetist who played with Joe “King” Oliver, said, “The band played full but no blasting. Joe wanted to hear those feet on the floor; the feet of the dancers. He’d say, ‘When you don’t hear those feet, you’re not playing music; you’re making noise.'”

Held to Ransom is a group of friends who get together to play swing and jazz music in their attempt to keep music LIVE!

This toe tapping ten piece is made up of: Steve Fischer (drums), Joe Howman and Nelson Oakley (trumpets), Michael Smith (guitar), Peter Weyand (bass) Sacha Hughes (keys), Andrew Bloyce (trombone), Eddie Bray (tenor sax), Ken Lincoln (alto sax), Trina Lincoln (vocals).

The Rhythm Society Dance Orchestra are an ensemble performing authentically reconstructed compositions and arrangements from the 1920s, 30s and 40s, celebrating popular tunes and dance music from the early years of jazz. The Orchestra is dedicated to the celebration and preservation of culturally, historically and aesthetically significant jazz recordings including the compositions of: Duke Ellington, Fletcher Henderson, Jelly Roll Morton, Joe Oliver, Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey and Glenn Miller.

The Rhythm Society Dance Orchestra have been playing for dancers in Brisbane and further afield for several years now, and they never fail to keep the dance floor swinging!

Formed out of a love of Django Reinhardt, Sigourney Weaver and Red Wine, Cigány Weaver are one the newest, and most exciting Gypsy Jazz acts in Australia. Having recently performed at Australia’s premier Gypsy Jazz Festival ‘OzManouche’ and the Woodford Folk Festival, they have captivated audiences with their unique performances, establishing an expansive following.

Cigány Weaver create sounds reminiscent of Jazz Manouche, Traditional Romani music to contemporaries such as Bjork. Their virtuosic live performances invoke an array of toe-tapping, from the subtle tap to the carefree exuberant stomp of the dance floor.

Azul Swing is a swing/jazz/blues & groove band for all occasions.

Band leader & guitarist Warwick Hargreaves hand picks a line up from among the cream of Brisbane’s jazz players, tailoring the outfit to suit each gig.

DJ Co-ordinator

Max Pogonowski has been on the interstate DJ circuit for a while, playing all the Swing tune genres, at Hullabaloo, MLX, and Canberrang. He’s also been DJ Co-ordinator for Southern Blues, SLX, The Art of Social Dancing and Swing Camp Oz.

For BLX 2017 Max has assembled a diverse team of DJ’s. He’s giving guys and gals an equal go on the decks while also giving newer DJ’s the chance to step up, without compromising the quality of the music at the event. We’re really proud to have Max onboard, and looking forward to introducing you to the DJ team he’s put together for us.

This means not using racist, homophobic, sexist or transphobic language, sexualised, rude or violent language, or language designed to make another person feel uncomfortable or inferior.

We expect every person to take ownership of their actions. This can include:

  • Do not touch someone else without first asking. Do not touch anyone inappropriately.
  • Stop touching them if they ask or tell you to.
  • Only closely embrace someone with their consent.
  • NEVER attempt aerials, lifts or drops on the social dancing floor.
  • In a jam, ensure you have consent to perform an aerial, lift or drop, with every partner, every time. (We should not need to remind you that throwing your partner off their own weight without consent in any way or for any reason is a violation of personal space and safety.)
  • Take proactive steps to find out whether the person you are dancing with is comfortable.
  • It is your right to refuse any dance, for any reason at any time. It is your right to stop dancing with someone at any point for any reason.
  • If someone lets you know, verbally or non-verbally, that they are feeling uncomfortable, check your behaviour, apologise sincerely, and make a change immediately.

Need Help?

If you are injured, feel uncomfortable or unsafe, or are experiencing or witnessing inappropriate behaviour, please let us know immediately. We will take urgent action. We will handle your complaint with absolute seriousness and in the strictest confidence.

  • You can approach:
    • the event manager
    • our volunteers at the front desk
    • our roaming volunteers
  • Ask for the event manager, who will handle your issue as a matter of priority.
  • If you do not feel comfortable speaking to someone while at the event itself, please contact us at BLXsafespace@empireswing.com.au , via a private message to our Facebook page or contact our events Safe Spaces Officer.
  • If someone lets you know that they are uncomfortable about another attendee’s behaviour, please encourage them to come and talk to us, or seek their permission to come and talk to us yourself. Even if they think it is not a big deal , we want to know about it so we can be prepared to take action and prevent situations from escalating.
